What is a skilled trade?
Around the world, the term “skilled trade” can mean different things. In Canada, a skilled trade is a career that involves hands-on, technical, and problem-solving work in fields such as construction, automotive, manufacturing, hospitality or mining. Unlike some countries where trades may not require formal training, Canada uses a structured system that often includes:
- Apprenticeship training: paid on-the-job learning with a certified tradesperson
- Technical training/college: classroom instruction and hands-on practice in a shop environment
- Certification and qualifications: to recognize your skills and experience
- Options for skilled trades workers with experience to challenge the Red Seal examination or levels of training
- Red Seal endorsement: a Canadian credential recognized across provinces and territories
Some trades require certification or registration in apprenticeship to work. For others, workers may start in the field and pursue certification over time. This structure ensures consistent safety, quality, and training standards across the country.
