Getting Back on Track: Support That Made the Difference

LJ’s interest in the trades began with a curiosity about manufacturing, particularly how aftermarket car parts are made. With a passion for cars and racing, that curiosity naturally led him toward machining.

Like many apprentices, LJ experienced multiple setbacks with the Red Seal exam, and the weight of repeated attempts began to take a toll. What started as frustration gradually impacted his confidence and motivation, leaving him feeling stuck and unsure of how to move forward.

Recognizing the need for a change, LJ made the decision to step back and reset. That turning point led him to seek out something he hadn’t accessed before: structured support.

Through the Road to Red Seal program, he connected with a dedicated support system, including his Learning Support Catalyst, Jani Martinius. For the first time, LJ wasn’t navigating the process alone. With consistent guidance, accountability, and encouragement, he began to rebuild both his technical understanding and his confidence.

A Smarter, More Sustainable Approach

With the right support in place, LJ reworked how he approached studying. Instead of long, high-pressure sessions that led to burnout, he shifted to a more focused and sustainable strategy that included shorter, consistent study periods, targeted practice, and a stronger understanding of how to approach exam questions.

He also developed tools to manage stress and test anxiety, allowing him to stay focused and make steady progress. The result was a more effective approach that prioritized consistency over intensity.

After 11 years of persistence, LJ passed his Red Seal exam.

His journey wasn’t straightforward. It included setbacks, pauses, and moments of doubt, but also growth, resilience, and the willingness to ask for help when it mattered most.

For LJ, earning his Red Seal represents both stability and opportunity. While he’s still exploring what comes next, he’s interested in continuing to build his skills, whether in programming or other areas of manufacturing. The certification also opens the door to personal goals, from getting back to track days with his car to travelling and building a better quality of life.

On the track, LJ channels the same focus and persistence that carried him through his Red Seal journey.

Advice for Others in the Trades

LJ’s advice reflects what he learned along the way:

  • Stay committed, but watch for burnout
  • Take breaks when needed, but keep moving forward
  • Advocate for your own training and progress
  • Ask for help early
  • If you’re passionate about the trade, stick with iteven when school gets challenging

His experience highlights a reality many tradespeople face: success isn’t always linear, but with the right support, it is achievable.
