Last year, the Skills Ready team held a memorable showcase event with the students of Gulf Islands Secondary School’s TASK (Trades Awareness Skills and Knowledge) Class. Thirteen students and five employers were in attendance. Students were given a chance to discuss the projects they had worked on and the skills and knowledge they had gained during the process.
Student Evur McDonough explained that the TASK class “provides a lot of universal skills and methodology for the rest of the trades”.
McDonough—currently employed for a construction company as a labourer—believes that after completing the TASK program, he’ll be more useful to his contractor because of his increased knowledge and skills that he acquired.
Students were quick to answer when the attending employers asked about the building process for the sheds the class is currently constructing. They detailed the measurements and calculations used in the design process and the lessons they learned from building. As the Showcase continued, a number of the employers jumped in to help teach.
“It’s great to see what kids are doing in our communities,” said Dalton Reid of Snazzy Construction when asked about the benefits of having a Skills Ready Showcase Event for shop classes. “I think it gives them some confidence to see employers interested in what they’re doing.” The event wrapped up with a casual discussion about the skills and knowledge the students have gained, future career plans.
