The cohort is supported by a tri-institutional collaboration between Camosun College, Okanagan College and BCIT that aims to maximize success and increase women’s participation and completion rates in Red Seal trades training – including electrical, carpentry and plumbing.
Earlier this month we gathered with the students to talk about their time in the program and the practical experience they were developing. Excitement for the future was in the air as they described their dreams of owning their own company, travelling, and the newfound freedom that a career and Red Seal Endorsement in the trades offered compared to past jobs.
“It is an honour to support this amazing group of women as they prepare for careers in the electrical trades,” shared Ellisha Mott, Vice President of Mott Electric GP. “The opportunities available in the electrical field are vast and helping to increase the participation rates of women in the trade is something Mott Electric dedicated to continuing.”
The students spoke of the amazing supports they received, from one-on-one instruction with inspirational teachers to obtaining financial supports to attend class. “It makes a big difference to be able to get through school with pocket money – everything goes towards rent, food, and staying in the program,” shared one student. “There are lots of people that don’t have access to these necessities and won’t make it.
