Building a professional network leads to plumbing apprenticeship

Career changes can be difficult in a new economic environment. After immigrating to Canada, Jawed obtained work in security and delivery driving. He worked diligently for five years with two companies and was ready for a change. In searching through career options, Jawed determined that the skilled trades was for him.

“I reached out to BCIB and they referred me to CFBC”, says Jawed. Connecting with René, Jawed was able to revamp his resume and connect with an employer that was willing to support his entry into the skilled trades.

Jawed attended an interview with Ian from Brighter Mechanical, in which the discussion flowed effortlessly. After an hour of chatting, Jawed was offered a labourer’s position. He accepted the offer and developed a plan to work with the company and move through the stages of his apprenticeship to become a Red Seal Plumber.

“I am extremely happy with the work environment, there’s a two-way mutual understanding and respect. At the end of the day, I am working, learning and earning at the same time.”
