Ukraine’s Oleh Marchyshyn Transitioning to Construction Career In Canada

April 24, 2023 (Victoria, BC) – Oleh Marchyshyn arrived in Victoria from Ukraine this past winter with his wife and very quickly found himself working again, albeit in a vastly different environment than he is typically accustomed to.

A rebar worker by trade, Marchyshyn’s transition to working life in Canada was made easier through support from his new co-workers and the Construction Foundation of BC’s Welcome Exchange program.

“The first day of work went by very quickly for me,” said Oleh. “What I remember is the good attitude of colleagues and their support and understanding that I am from another country.”

Oleh noted the professionalism on-site that he has experienced as a tradesperson in Canada: clearly set tasks, safety measures and the support received from his colleagues. While he admits his English skills still need improvement, Oleh credited his employer’s ability to recognize his skill set above all else.

“I am really glad that my skills were appreciated by the employer,” added Oleh. “I hear positive feedback and it’s nice. I also like the team. This is a multinational, professional staff and everyone knows their own tasks and responsibilities.”

Oleh’s skill set and knowledge have eased his transition immensely and helped him adapt to Canada’s set of working standards. He is confident in his current abilities and has already set long-term, career goals.

“I will always need physical endurance, the ability to use hand tools and knowledge of techniques and rules,” noted Oleh. “I have devoted my whole life to my work…developing professionally is my everyday business. In the future, I plan to confirm my skills and receive a Red Seal. I am also actively learning English to take the next steps as a professional.”

Oleh shared his thoughts for others who may be hesitant or have reservations about stepping into the construction industry in Canada. “My advice is simple,” concluded Oleh. “Do not be afraid of physical work. In some places it can really be difficult, but in Canada there are many opportunities in this area. You can start working quickly, even without similar experience and perfect english.”
