What is a skilled trade?
Canada trains skilled trades workers through a formal apprenticeship system, which includes:
- Work-based training (on-the-job learning) You work with a certified tradesperson and get paid while you learn.
- Technical or classroom training You learn theory, safety, and technical skills, and practice in a workshop at a college, university, or training center.
- Red Seal endorsement and certification Many trades offer a Red Seal which is accepted across provinces and territories. Having a Red Seal shows you meet Canadian standards.
- Options for experienced workers If you have years of experience, you may be eligible to challenge certification exams or level exams.
