On March 12, CFBC’s Welcome Exchange hosted its latest employment connection event at Fort Tectoria in Victoria, designed specifically for immigrants and newcomers to Canada. Attendees connected with local professionals from various industries, gained insight into the Canadian job market, and received tailored career guidance designed to help thrive in the Capital Regional District.
The afternoon event included a panel discussion titled “Navigating the Canadian Job Market: Stories of Failure, Success, and Lessons Learned by Immigrants,” featuring insights and personal stories from accomplished immigrant professionals, a professional networking session to connect with fellow newcomers, potential mentees, and industry peers, and an interactive employment workshop, focusing on employee rights in BC. Interested attendees received professional headshots to use in future career search endeavours and professional networking opportunities.
“As a newcomer to Canada, I know that on the path to career success, immigrants and newcomers can face dozens of different barriers–from poor English to cultural differences,” noted Daria Lysenko, Community and Career Catalyst at CFBC. “However, no matter how difficult it is, you should not give up. You need to go towards your success, just as our panelists went towards it. Step by step, from a construction labourer to a juris doctor, from a volunteer to a general director.”
The free of charge event was facilitated and moderated by CFBC’s Welcome Exchange team with the support of the Help Ukraine Vancouver Island Society.
