Having a driver’s licence opens new doors to future careers for young people, and for Alex, getting his licence helped him to get a promotion at work.

Alex, a member of Esquimalt Nation, was working in construction and was told that having a driver’s license could help him to move up the ranks and gain more independence at work.

After hearing about the SHIFT Fund from an employment counsellor at his band office, Alex quickly submitted his application for driver training. After receiving the grant, he took a series of professional lessons and successfully took his road test and attained his BC Driver’s Licence.

“Getting professional lessons was the way to go, my instructor, Duncan provided great advice and helped me to build confidence on the road.  Life is a lot better since I got my driver’s license,” shared Alex.  “It has been a big step forward for me and I’ve taken on more responsibility in my job with Perma Construction.”

Looking to the future, Alex wants to continue moving up and gaining more responsibilities in the construction sector.
