STARTING ON THE TOOLS
Jessica Sidhu is the Lead Project Coordinator with Kinetic Construction, and is a great example of the opportunities that are available within the secondary school system.
Sidhu got her start in the construction industry when she was 17 years old. She took an ACE IT (now “Youth Train in Trades”) program during secondary school, a dual credit program that allows students to earn secondary school credits as well as technical training credits. Sidhu dedicated her final semester of secondary school working in the shop, drafting or building structures.
A BIGGER IMPACT
Following secondary school, Sidhu began to pursue her carpentry apprenticeship through North Island College and ultimately decided she wanted to make a greater impact. She then enrolled in the Architectural and Building Technology Program at BCIT. The program provides students with the skills and knowledge needed to work in building design and construction.
During the summer, Sidhu would work as a labourer with local construction companies. She completed her practicum with Kinetic Construction during her final year of studies at BCIT and was subsequently offered a permanent position as a Project Coordinator.
TAKING THE LEAD
Sidhu has now taken on the roll of Lead Project Coordinator with Kinetic. In this role, she provides advice and training to Junior Project Coordinators and solves problems that may arise during planning and implementation of projects. With her background on the tools, Sidhu understands the building process, an advantage when it comes to problem solving in her line of work.
