At the Construction Foundation of BC, we are fortunate to connect with amazing individuals and companies who are dedicated to enhancing the communities in which they live and work.
Since 1984, Kinetic Construction has successfully completed hundreds of construction projects and now employs over 150 people across its offices in Victoria, Vancouver, and Courtenay.
Through our Skills Ready initiative, we have had the opportunity to connect with several members of the Kinetic Construction team. In spending time with them, we noticed that everyone is truly dedicated to creating a positive impact in their communities.
We met with President and CEO of Kinetic Construction, Tom Plumb, at their annual golf tournament in Victoria to talk about corporate social responsibility and why Kinetic Construction is Here for Good.
ON BUILDING A CORPORATE CULTURE THAT INVOLVES GOOD WORKS
It’s about being holistic. Our values at work should be the same values we live by at home, so therefore our willingness to contribute to a community should be an extension of who we are – and that applies to corporations as well. We strive to create a great culture and environment in the workplace, which occupies 50% of our lives, as a result, paying it forward is just something we want to do.
WHAT DOES GIVING BACK TO COMMUNITIES MEAN TO YOU
What resonates with me is that charity connects with our primary purpose for being here at all which is how, in your time here, did you positively contribute to or make someone’s life better. That’s it. When we all get to that place where we find ourselves in a bed staring at an awful green ceiling it will be the only thing that will have any value.
THE GOLF TOURNAMENT AND IT’S CHARITABLE FOCUS
Our golf tournament is one way that we gather as a company/family, with the help of our industry partners, to raise funds for various charities. In the past, we have donated to the big groups, but our focus now is more local, as there is so much need in our communities.
IMPACT OF INVOLVEMENT
Some of the charities we support have a direct personal connection with us. For example, MADD Comox Valley, where one of our own families suffered a tragic impact on their lives from a drunk driver. The tenacity and willingness to make a difference shown by the mother in starting the MADD Comox Valley chapter deserves our endless support.
Inspire Health, who I greatly admire for their caring model, helped a relative of a staff member through a very difficult time fighting cancer. We have also supported the Children’s Wish Foundation and seeing the impact our donation had on a child’s life, it touches you deeply.
WHERE IS KINETIC GOING NEXT WITH REGARDS TO COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT?
The trend I see is not only increasing our contributions year after year but encouraging more employees to get involved and donate their own time and sweat equity to good causes. Hands on contributions can provide multiple layers of benefits, not only for the receiver but the giver. One of these recipients is HeroWork, a non profit organization geared to help other non profits achieve the complicated process of capital improvements. It’s win-win.
