April 19, 2024 (Abbotsford, BC) – The Construction Foundation of BC (CFBC) team travelled to Abbotsford’s TradeX for the 30th annual Provincial Trade and Technology Competition. CFBC’s presence at the event included hands-on activities, displays on green building technologies and information about the organization’s programs and initiatives.
Thousands attended this year’s competitions to engage in interactive, hands-on activities and visit the Pathways to Careers Showcase, which featured a CFBC activation booth. The booth included sheet metal, HVAC and plumbing hands-on activities, as well as Build Green Together displays on active house building (green roofs, heat pumps, zero emission homes, insulation, and solar roof panels). A non-stop stream of students visited the CFBC booth and team of seven throughout the day.
Several CFBC partners were on hand at this year’s event: the Mechanical Contractors Association of BC (MCABC), Shift Energy Group and BCIT’s Zero Energy Learning Centre (ZED). The support of everyone on-site, as well as the continued support from Build Green Together partners Vancity and the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills was greatly appreciated!
“My favourite takeaway from this event is the curiosity and energy of the youth that we see all day long,” said director of project operations, René Ragetli. “The Skills Canada BC Provincials are a unique event. There is no better way to see, hear and feel what working in the trades can offer a person.”
Over 600 secondary and post-secondary students who medaled at Regionals from around the province competed in a wide variety of trades and technology competitions at Wednesday’s event, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, baking, welding, graphic design, 3D animation and more. Gold medalists from the Provincial competition become part of Team BC and will now compete at the 2024 Skills Canada National Competition in Quebec City, Quebec.
