Neela is an Ulkatcho and Secwepemc woman, carving her own path to success with a go-getter attitude, and vision for her future and full intention to reconnect with her culture.
During her school days, she dropped into youth centres to connect with mentors, gain access to several supports and help her keep focused to achieve her goals. By doing this, Neela was able to complete three years of high school in one year! This determination launched her into her journey into the personal health and beauty industry. She has already earned several certificates and plans to enroll in the local esthetics school to further develop her trades skills, all with the intent to own a salon one day.
Having a salon of her own will allow her the freedom to move closer to her family and keep her siblings closer together. Community is an important aspect of Neela’s life, as she is focused on gathering her family, and keeping a close connection with her guiding elders.
She is staying connected to cultural healing practices and has learned so much from her elders. From beading and creating cultural crafts to apprenticing as a sweat lodge facilitator, she is learning the ways to promote and encourage healthy living within Indigenous communities.
Neela will have a full future connected to culture, community, and a successful career, building the life she envisioned for herself.

“Stay in school and do what you want to do. There is LOTS of funding out there to support you; just ask for it.”
